Description
In line with the 2016 New York Declaration on Refugees and Migrants and its Comprehensive Refugee Response Framework (CRRF), Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and Panama have been developing a regional application of the CRRF, known as the Comprehensive Regional Protection and Solutions Framework (MIRPS) for the Americas. The MIRPS is an initiative encouraging regional cooperation between countries of origin, transit and destination in Central America and Mexico, to foster responsibility-sharing on matters related to prevention, protection and durable solutions.

In August 2020, the MIRPS countries identified a need in strenghtening asylums systems and 3 thematic areas were identified for further discussion: 1) Management of large-scale movements of refugees, 2) Identification of needs of international protection, case management and biometric registration and 3) The use of differentiated modalities of case processing. The Support Platform in coordination with The Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) requested support from the EU through MIEUX+ to provide targeted support to the organisation of the workshop on the first thematic area.

The main objective of the MIRPS Action was to strenghten national asylum systems of the countries through dialogue and peer-to-peer capacity development, as well as opening the space for dialogue between EU and local and regional actors.
