Bringing together partners in Central Asia to learn more about MIEUX+

On 17 February 2021, we organised an online event so that institutions in Central Asia could learn about the newest features and opportunities for strengthening migration governance and management through capacity development partnerships with MIEUX+. Since 2009, we have worked with partners in the region on labour migration and policy development (e.g. Tajikistan III, Kyrgyzstan). With MIEUX+, there are new opportunities for collaboration.

Online event to strengthen the partnerships with Central Asia

More than 90 people registered for the event, representing a variety of stakeholders, such as public authorities, civil society organisations, in multiple countries of the region.

Representing the European Commission, Isabelle Wahedova, Policy Officer, Migration and Forced Displacement, DG International Partnerships (DG INTPA) welcomed and closed the event by saying that ‘Migration is a big priority for the European Commission, and it is important to work together to ensure that everyone is part of the discussion. The capacity building that MIEUX+ provides to partner authorities goes beyond its beneficiaries; it is also catalytic for partnerships contributing to the exchange with other stakeholders.’

Additionally, Radim Žák, ICMPD Regional Coordinator for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, highlighted the importance of working together towards orderly, safe and regular migration. Finally, MIEUX+ team members joined the discussion to explain the new features of the phase launched in 2020 as well as the procedures to submit a request.

MIEUX+ in Central Asia

Asia represents the first region of origin of migration flows, with 106 million out of 258 million international migrants born in Asian countries. In Central and South East Asia, the search for better economic opportunities and higher wages represents one of the main drivers of migration. Russia is an important destination for labour migrants working mainly in the construction and service sectors from Central Asian countries.

Since its launch in 2009, MIEUX has implemented 17 Actions in Asia, of which 7 in Central Asia, covering topics linked to irregular migration and trafficking in human beings, and labour migration, among others. The existing collaboration with institutions of Central Asian countries has proven to be effective, as demonstrated by the Actions in Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.

What to expect looking forward?

MIEUX+ is inviting partners in the region of Central Asia to submit their requests for capacity development on any topic linked to migration. In spite of the COVID-19 pandemic, the initiative is operating normally by adjusting its activities to the online environment.
