Objective

In 2020, the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) has requested support from MIEUX+ to contribute to an effective and coordinated management of migration and mobility in the COMESA region in the framework of a health crisis.

Specific objectives:

  • To strengthen the capacities of COMESA and COMESA MS authorities to manage migration and mobility at the borders in the framework of a health crisis.
  • To support COMESA and COMESA MS authorities to better communicate with stakeholders at the borders during a health crisis.

Activities

Activity 1: Fact-finding meetings and survey among COMESA MS to assess the training and information needs regarding the management of migration/mobility at the borders during a health crisis.

Activity 2: Regional information sharing and exchange on border management in the framework of a health crisis, and information sessions for the pre-selected COMESA MS.

Activity 3: Development of a training course for border officials on the management of migration/mobility at the borders in the framework of a health crisis.

Activity 4: Training of border officials on the management of migration/mobility at the borders in the framework of a health crisis (targeting selected pilot border posts).

Activity 5: Development of awareness-raising materials (for selected border posts).

Activity 6: Regional presentation of the training course on the management of migration/mobility at the borders in the framework of a health crisis and the awareness-raising materials.

Results and outputs

  • Questionnaire for a survey among COMESA MS.
  • Report on the results of the fact-finding meetings and survey among COMESA MS.
  • Training course on managing migration/mobility at the borders in the framework of a health crisis.
  • Awareness-raising and information materials targeting stakeholders at the borders during a health crisis, with a specific focus on the measures in place in the framework of the current COVID-19 crisis
