Brazil II - Interviewing children in migration

Objectif

The overall objective of this Action is to support Brazil’s Government through peer-to-peer knowledge exchange to better assist children in migration.

The specific objectives of this Action are:

  • To assess the situation of children in migration in two states of Brazil (Amazonas and Roraima) recording high immigration from Venezuela
  • To strengthen the intersectional capacities of, in particular, DPU (Public Defenders' Office) staff to conduct interviews with children in migration based on the structured interview protocol considering sex, age, ethnicity and impairments among other factors

Activity 1: Fact-finding mission to assess the situation of children in migration in Amazonas and Roraima

Activity 2: Seminar on EU good practices on assistance and protection of children in migration

Activity 3: Remote assistance to develop a practical guide on gender sensitive interviewing techniques for international protection applicants with a particular focus on interviewing children

Activity 4: Workshops on gender sensitive and intersectional interviewing techniques for international protection applicants with a particular focus on interviewing children (girls and boys)

Résultats et produits livrables

Results

  • Support to the Brazilian authorities to comprehensively assess the situation of migrant children, considering different factors such as age, sex, impairments and ethnicity, in the main destinations of Venezuelan migrants in Brazil (Amazonas and Roraima)
  • Transferring EU know-how, best practices and experience on protection and assistance of children in migration, in particular interviewing techniques for international protection applications with a specific focus on children
  • Strengthen the interview techniques and intersectional capacities of its staff members in order to conduct effective interviews with children within the international protection context while respecting the best interests of the children

Outputs

  • A comprehensive fact-finding mission report on the situation of children in migration in Amazonas and Roraima is produced and presented to the partner authority
  • Peer-to-peer exchanges on good practices between the partner authority and the EU experts
  • Workshops on interviewing children in migration are put in place in different locations in Brazil
  • A practical guide on gender sensitive interviewing children is developed
